In dramatic scenes our Year 5/6 Boys Soccer team has capped off a fairy-tale run by winning the MPSSA District soccer competition. Led admirably by our co-captains Christian Borg (6A) and Daniel Tor (6A) the team finished equal top after the Pool games to advance to the semi-finals. In the semis Heathdale were up against St. Anthony’s Primary School – last year’s premiers who had gone through the pool stage undefeated.
Heathdale scored early after a brilliant solo run by Christian down the left wing. St. Anthony’s equalised in the second half and scores were tied at full time which pushed the game into a penalty shootout. Our goalie Hitesh Mandava (6A) held his nerve and made 3 saves to rocket the team into the Grand Final!
In the Final we were up against Melton South Primary School. Again, Heathdale scored early after a classy one-two combination between Christian and Daniel. Melton South then threw everything at Heathdale to try and equalise, but our boys bravely held on thanks to some desperate back four defence to clinch the championship at full-time.
Our Girls team fought hard all day and came third in their Pool to go into the 5th and 6th playoff match which they lost in a close game – a more than admirable effort considering this is the first competitive match the entire squad has played. Well done girls!
