This week I was pleased to receive some very well-expressed and articulated correspondence from a number of students in Year 4. In the letters, each student practised their persuasive writing and attempted to convince me of why their big idea should be adopted by the school. Every letter was composed thoughtfully and contained practical ideas for their chosen ideas to be put into effect. The benefits were enormous – I was convinced!
One letter waded in on the topic of allowing Years 3 and 4 students to go to camp, saying ‘Get ready to be persuaded Mrs Moffett’, before listing out the major arguments for camp. Most of them were around learning new skills and having fun, ‘Don’t you want kids to have fun?’ Of course, I do!
Another letter posed the question, ‘Wouldn’t you love to speed down a hill on a flying fox?’ Now, while I might not, the arguments for relieving playground congestion, benefits to health and the scientific exploration of velocity and speed were impressive.
Other letters argued for lockers over tubs, a class pet, canteen visitation rights, a greater selection of sports, more competition, and some even waxed lyrical about laptops. ‘Roses are red, Violets are Blue, I should have a laptop, and you should too.’
After reading these letters and considering all of their ideas, I am very sure our students are in for the brightest of futures!
It is clear our students are learning how to wield their own ideas and use their creativity in writing to convey a clear pathway and adopt a certain message. I look forward to seeing these students continue to provide solutions for matters concerning themselves and the greater good. The students are well placed and prepared to look for ways to serve others in our school as the year continues.
Well done to all students for playing the part that you do. Our school is such a vibrant and energetic learning space and we look forward to the individual contributions each student will continue to make as this year continues. Students with great ideas are encouraged to continue to persist with strength of commitment and courage.
May you know the Lord’s blessings and mercy on your holiday activities and I look forward to seeing you in Term 4.
