The Athletics Carnival was held on Tuesday 24 March on another overcast day, similar to the Swimming Carnival. There was also a slight headwind for the track runners as they ran the final 100m of their events.
Throughout the day, multiple records were broken, and all of them were broken by girls: Claire D (U13 Female 1500m and 800m), Charlotte R (U14 Female 1500m), Erica H (U15 Female 1500m), Elise S (U16 Female 1500m), Aston B (U18 Female 1500m) and Lyla P (U18 Female High Jump).
Lyla broke the previous High Jump record by 9cm. She also broke her own personal record by 1cm to claim the U18 High Jump title for the third year running.
There were many other students who thought they had come close to breaking a record but unfortunately had not realised that some of the records at HCC have been standing since 1996 and may never be broken! Even with the new timing gates, which completely remove the need for stopwatches and human reaction times, the records are still holding strong.
The day ran relatively smoothly, although we did need to cut the day short and skip the 400m so that we could complete all the relays, as some dark clouds came floating by. This may have impacted a few students who were really looking forward to competing in this event but with the weather closing in, we made the decision to prioritise the relays so more students could be involved.
Many thanks to all the staff who helped throughout the day by entering results into an iPad system that didn’t seem to want to cooperate! Staff pivoted easily, and we have now successfully entered all results.
The final standings are:
1st – Taylor (3552)
2nd – Stanway (3468)
3rd – Judson (3355)
4th – Carey (3286)
