Shaping Primary Students to Lead Well

From Class Captains to House Leaders and more, leadership opportunities in Primary are helping students develop strong character while serving their peers and school community.

As we have embarked on a new school year, the classrooms are buzzing with fresh energy and new opportunities. One of the most significant aspects of this season is the commencement of our Primary Student Leadership program. At our school, leadership is viewed as a journey of Biblically based character development, providing students with structured opportunities to serve their peers and grow in responsibility.

Class Captains in Years 3–6

For students in the middle and upper primary years, leadership begins within the familiar walls of their classroom. Our Class Captains are selected on a semester basis, allowing a variety of students to experience the weight and reward of a leadership role. These students act as vital bridges between the teacher and the student body by modelling positive character and providing practical support in the daily operations of the room.

As students move through the different year levels, the roles and responsibilities of the Class Captain increase, and it is pleasing to see so many students benefit from this challenge. To ensure these students are truly developing as individuals, they participate in four leadership training sessions throughout their tenure. Led by Mr Haworth and Mrs Sega, these workshops focus on the practicalities of communication, planning and the character skills required to grow in their leadership development.

Year 6 House Leaders and Primary Captains

Year 6 represents a significant milestone where leadership extends beyond the classroom and into the wider school community. Students in these senior positions, such as House Leaders and Primary Captains, serve the school through the planning and presentation of House Gatherings and Module Assemblies. They play an active role in supporting House activities, coordinating competitions and leading various community service initiatives.

The success of our Year 6 leaders is bolstered by a dedicated coaching team. Mrs Van Niekerk, Miss Birkett, Miss Brisbane, Mrs Cheah and Madame West work closely with these students, providing the mentorship and support necessary for them to grow in both character and skill. This collaborative approach ensures that our Year 6 students are not just filling a role but are being actively coached to reach their full potential as young leaders.

Our Leadership Philosophy: Biblically Based Leadership

While the specific tasks vary by grade level, the core attributes we coach and develop in all our student leaders remain the same. We aim to cultivate a specific culture rooted in servanthood, confidence with humility, faithfulness and compassion. These are the attributes that make a leader stand out and promote the type of environment we are proud to see in the Primary school.

This philosophy is beautifully captured in Philippians 2:3-4: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others."

As our new leaders begin their tenure, we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will undoubtedly have on our school community as they learn to look to the interests of those around them.
