Preparing for the Future

From Careers Week to Coolamatong Camp and VCE subject selections, Term 3 has been a pivotal season for our Year 10s as they explore their future pathways.

Term 3 has been busy for our Year 10 students – Careers Week, Coolamatong Camp and this week’s VCE Information Night and subject selection process.

All of these events help our students to think deeply about the future—what they might like to study, how they want to be present in the world, the values they carry forward and the future they might embrace.

We stage these three events for Year 10 close together to deliberately give them the time and space to process all the information and choices that are rushing upon them. Trying to work through your options and consider the abundant opportunities available is no easy task. Having the support of their teachers, their families and our qualified pathways staff as they engage in that thinking (and talking!) is vital to helping our students work through the course they would like to set for the next few years.

At Heathdale, we want our students to think beyond what the future might hold for them and what they might get out of life. Being successful, having a good career and achieving your dreams are good things. But a favourite quote of mine from L. M. Montgomery provides a different perspective to choosing pathways: “It's not what the world holds for you, it's what you bring to it.”

When I spoke with our Year 10s at the beginning of Careers Week, I encouraged them to approach their future career not by asking “What can I get?” but “What can I give?”

Each one of us is uniquely gifted by God for a purpose and with the capacity to do good in this world. In response to God’s goodness to us, there are so many ways we can live a life of purpose, presence and meaning.

As we continue the journey with our class of 2027, we are praying that they will feel encouraged, hopeful and well-supported in their decision making over the next few weeks.
