10-12 Debating
The Years 10-12 House Debating Competition took place on Wednesday 17th September, with Taylor taking on Judson and Carey taking on Stanway. The two debate topics were:
1. That the Australian Government should regulate social media platforms
2. That the Australian Government should provide free university education
All teams and students produced great reasons for why their side of the argument was correct, but in the end it could only be one winning House per debate.
In the first debate between Taylor and Judson, the scores were 432 to 438 with Judson taking the win. Jemimah R from Judson, the last speaker for the debate, was also awarded best speaker. Her enthusiasm and knowledge showed through to finish the debate with the win.
The second debate had even closer scores. One adjudicator scored the debate as a 228 to 229 while the other judge scored it as 228 to 225. Stanway ultimately took the win over Carey. The best speaker was awarded to Nicky D from Carey, with an honourable mention of Kishan G. Well done to Stanway on the win, with a total of 456 over Carey on 454.
Overall, a very well thought out argument was given by both sides in both debates.
10-12 General Knowledge
The General Knowledge for the 10-12 Module was divided into two sections. Each house had three students who had a keen interest in the topics. Section 1 was on Bible, Movies and Sport and Section 2 covered Math/Science, English Literature and then General Knowledge. Students participated in a Kahoot with questions being seen by the audience by as per Kahoot requirements, the speed of your answer also plays a part in your placings.
At the end of the first section, all three of the Carey students were in the top four spots, with one lone Stanway student in 3rd. The other two Stanway students were in 5th and 6th position. Taylor and Judson then took out the remaining six places.
After Section 2, Taylor had taken first and third place with Stanway in second, fourth and fifth. Carey’s top placing was in 6th and Judson’s top player in 8th.
The overall winer of the 10-12 Module General Knowledge was Stanway, with Carey in Second, Taylor in third and Judson in fourth.
Well done to all students who participated and to all the students who also ‘silently participated while in the audience...’
7-9 General Knowledge
The 7-9 General Knowledge was also completed in the same format at the 10-12 Module General Knowledge. However, this time a few staff also participated in the Kahoot while in the audience. They walked around the audience and had students from year 7, 8 & 9 guess the answers, to see if they would be better than those on stage.
The final standings of the first section were Carey in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Taylor in 4th, 5th and 8th. Only one Judson player had been able to beat the Carey and Taylor teams. The best Stanway student finished in 10th, however both the Years 8 and 7 teams also finished in 7th and 9th respectively.
At the end of the second Kahoot, the game had made a huge change with Taylor taking out the top three places, a 'Mr Grinch' in 4th and Stanway in 5th. A Judson player took out 6th, but Carey had fallen all the way back to 12–14th places.
In the end, Taylor coming out on top in 1st position, Carey took 2nd place, Judson in 3rd and Stanway in 4th. Overall, a very successful event with lots of student participation, and the entry of the staff teams added that extra excitement of who could beat the ‘chosen few.’
