Hope in Bloom on Wattle Day

Wattle Day offered more than spring’s first bloom; it pointed us to the hope and unity we find in Christ.

On Monday, we marked Wattle Day.

Wattle Day is a celebration of the first day of spring, and it reminds us of the beauty and resilience of God’s creation here in Australia. The golden wattle has long been a national symbol of hope and unity, flourishing even after fire and drought—a powerful picture of renewal. It is also significant to our First Nations brothers and sisters, who have long recognised the flowering of the wattle as part of seasonal changes in the land and as a marker of time in the Kulin calendar.

Students and staff at both Weribee and Melton wore Wattle Day stickers to mark the arrival of spring and reflect on the call to be people of reconciliation, peace and unity in our school and beyond. Some Primary classes also displayed artwork and colouring-in of golden wattle images.

As Christians, this was a meaningful opportunity to pause and celebrate new life in Christ. Just as the wattle bursts into colour after hardship, we are reminded that God brings new life and restoration:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
