This year, 109 exceptional students from Heathdale Christian College proudly represented our school in the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO). Our participants included two teams from Years 7–8 and two teams from Years 4–6, showcasing the depth of mathematical talent across both primary and secondary levels.
The APSMO program is a prestigious competition that:
- Promotes advanced mathematical problem-solving skills;
- Supports teachers in developing flexible thinking strategies;
- Encourages creativity and collaboration; and
- Inspires a love for mathematics among students.
With over 100,000 students from hundreds of schools, participating across Australia and New Zealand, the Olympiad provides a challenging platform for high-achieving students to extend their skills beyond the standard curriculum. Participants commit to regular homework tasks and sit formal assessments each term, with results released in October.
At Heathdale, students are selected based on their AGAT (Cognitive Abilities Test), PAT-M (Progressive Achievement Test in Mathematics) and PAT-R (Progressive Achievement Test in Reading) scores. The Olympiad problems require deep conceptual understanding and creative thinking, making it a valuable opportunity for our most capable mathematicians.
We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Years 4–6 team. Natalie D received the highest score for the teams, while Nathaniel Z and Fred Y followed closely behind. All these Year 6 students were placed in the top 10% of students across Australasia.
Even more impressively, the entire Years 5–6 Team A achieved the remarkable distinction of being ranked in the top 10% of all participating schools in Australia and New Zealand. These results showed that we had, in this case, outperformed several leading schools across Australia and New Zealand.
Our Years 7-8 students also performed well, with the teams placing in the Top 20% (80th percentile). Anaya S and Siddhant S received the top scores for the two year levels, both being placed in the top 10% of students across Australasia.
These results reflect the dedication of our students, the expertise of our teachers, and the culture of academic excellence that defines Heathdale Christian College. We congratulate all our Olympiad participants on their hard work and success!
