Haniel Spoke, Change Followed

When Year 11 student Haniel spoke up about menstrual equity, her voice joined a chorus for change – and Victoria listened.

Year 11 student Haniel has proven that young voices can make a real difference. Earlier this year, Haniel entered the Parliament Prize, an annual competition inviting students to share what they would say if they were a Member of Parliament. Her chosen topic was 'Menstrual Products are a Right, Not a Luxury.'

In her two-minute video speech, Haniel highlighted the ongoing issue of menstrual products not being freely available in many private workplaces and schools. Inspired by conversations with her mother and friends, she argued that access to these essential items should never be a privilege.

While her passionate advocacy earned her a Highly Commended Award, the story didn’t end there. Just months later, Premier Jacinta Allan announced a new initiative to provide free menstrual products in a wide range of public spaces across Victoria. The law mirrored Haniel’s proposal almost word for word.

Thrilled by the news, Haniel reached out to John Lister, Werribee’s local MP, expressing her joy at seeing her ideas reflected in legislation. John responded promptly, praising her courage and promising to share her speech with the Premier. Soon after, Haniel received a personal letter from Jacinta Allan herself, commending her speech and encouraging her to keep raising her voice on important issues.

Reflecting on the experience, Haniel said, “I was so surprised when I saw the law passed—it was exactly what I had spoken about. It feels amazing to know that young people can influence change.”

Haniel’s journey doesn’t stop here. She plans to enter the competition again next year and hopes to continue advocating for social issues, from women’s health awareness to poverty reduction. Her current long-term dream is a career in medicine, possibly working with UNICEF to support communities worldwide.

Haniel’s story is a powerful reminder that every voice matters, and that even a school holiday project can spark statewide change!
