The Year 3 students recently enjoyed a HASS incursion where they learned about the Australian voting system and the importance of an absolute majority.

The incursion began with students presenting why they should be voted as mayor. After the speeches, a mock election was held, and the candidate with the absolute majority became the mayor. Students experienced the entire process, from identifying themselves and voting using a 1-6 preference system to ensuring the voting box remained secure.

The newly elected mayor then led a mock council meeting to debate whether dogs should be allowed off-leash in the local park. Students presented arguments for and against the proposal, discussing benefits like providing a safe space for pets and challenges such as potential risks to the community.

This hands-on experience gave students a practical understanding of democracy and decision-making, leaving them with a deeper appreciation for civic engagement. The incursion was a resounding success, fostering both learning and enthusiasm—leaving students excited to vote in 2035!
