Exploring States of Matter

An engaging Science incursion gave Year 3 students at Melton the chance to experiment, predict and explore key science concepts up close.

Our Year 3 students recently enjoyed a hands-on science incursion exploring states of matter. Students Mercy and Ciana reflect:

"Last Thursday Class 3A went to an incursion in the Digi Tech room and it was about what we have been learning in science. First there were three balloons: one was filled with hard beans, one was filled with water, and one was filled with air. We had to predict whether the balloons were filled with a solid, liquid or gas. We then got to grow crystals in a small plastic cup. We also learnt about viscosity, which is a fluid’s resistance to flow. Our experiment showed that a special metal called gallium melted faster than candle wax. We were all shocked by that result!" Mercy

"On Thursday 11th June Year 3B enjoyed a science incursion. Out of all the experiments we did on states of matter, we most enjoyed making a bouncy ball from crystals. To make the ball we poured colourful crystals into a round plastic mould. With each pour we had to shake the crystals to the bottom of the mould to ensure that it was completely filled. We then placed the mould into a glass of water, holding it there for 5 seconds. We then had to drop the crystal-filled mould into the water for one full minute. Our presenter, Paige, helped us to extract the ball from the mould. The colours were beautiful and they all bounced really well. We were able to keep this fun memento from our incursion." Ciana
