Creative Sparks Flying at Comic Club

What began with Year 2 student Warren and a few friends reading comics on the deck has blossomed into a creative movement, now inspiring dozens of students each week through Comic Club.

A quiet initiative has grown into one of the liveliest and most creative lunchtime activities in our K-2 Module—Comic Club!

What started with Warren J (2C) and a few friends reading comic books outside on the deck has blossomed into a weekly event attended by 40–60 enthusiastic Year 1 and 2 students. Inspired by Warren’s initiative, Mrs Esterhuizen asked if he’d like to lead a club open to all students. Warren was thrilled and created a promotional poster over a long weekend. Soon after, posters went up around the Year 1/2 building, and Comic Club was born.

From the very first day, the club has drawn crowds of eager young readers and illustrators. The Year 2 shared space transforms into a relaxed, imaginative hub where students sit on cushions, gather around tables, or stretch out on the floor to read comic books or craft their own. The atmosphere is calm, inclusive, and full of creativity.

“I just put everything out—and the students take it from there,” says Mrs Esterhuizen. And they truly do. Some even bring their comic creations to the Sensory Space on other days, eager to continue their stories. Wherever you look, there’s bound to be a student with a comic book in hand, immersed in reading or creating.

Comic Club has become more than just a fun break activity—it’s a place where imagination, leadership, and community flourish. Many students have personally thanked Mrs Esterhuizen for making it happen. She reflected, “Sometimes we wish things would happen or be different—but often, we have to take the first step.” It’s a reminder that God often uses small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10) to do something beautiful.

A big thank you to Warren for taking that first step and to Mrs Esterhuizen for supporting and nurturing such a special initiative. Who knows—some of these young creators may become the next great writers or illustrators!

What our students love about Comic Club:

Amaris (2B): “I love making stories up with my pretend cat Pom Pom.” (Pom Pom was also sitting at the table!)
Elias (2E): “I love Comic Club because we can read comic books. My favourite is Dog Man.”
James (2E): “I love making stories about games and Dog Man.”
Lineve (2D): “I love drawing and making things for my Mum and Dad.”

Comic Club takes place every Thursday during the first half of lunch in the Year 2 shared space and is open to all Year 1 and 2 students. All that’s needed is imagination—and maybe a pencil or a favourite comic book to start!
