Our Year 9 Culture & Environment students put on an impressive display of their sustainability research projects on Tuesday night.
As part of their studies, Culture & Environment students work in groups to take on an action-research project to investigate an area of sustainability for our school or beyond. This year’s projects included textiles recycling, food production and developing recycling awareness at school.
Our People’s Choice Award, as voted by visitors to the exhibit, went to Sweet Sustainability. This talented team created a sale of delicious baked goods for which the required currency for purchase was recyclable bottles. Playground chaos was created as a surge of students eagerly queued to buy delectable home-cooked brownies holding literally hundreds of bottles! In the end, the team collected over 500 bottles, which they then recycled through Victoria’s container deposit scheme, and profits were donated to charity.
The Principal’s Choice Award went to the Sustainability Leadership Team who developed a proposal and vision for ongoing student leadership in the area of sustainability. The final action paper will be presented to Secondary Leadership for consideration.
Notable mention must be made of the Sustainable Lighting team. Their initiative to create reminder stickers in all classrooms around switching off lights and using blinds effectively has helped to measurably reduce the power usage in Secondary classrooms. A simple but brilliant idea and well executed!
Congratulations to all students who work hard to research and prepare their ideas for the evening. Thank you to Mr Schmidt, Mrs Ting and Mrs Harsono for their work in preparing students for the evening as well.
