We are delighted to share that Year 12 student Chloe Zimmerman has been shortlisted for Top Arts 2024! Chloe reflects on her work:
"School has been my whole life, full of routine, safety and stability. However, as the last year rolls around, there is new-developed fear of ‘what comes next?’. Life is going on, but the fear of the future holds you down in a chokehold. Looking toward a bright future in years to come with so many options, there’s a trapped feeling and almost monochromatic mindset of past experiences that really chokes you as you look into the future. Taking my influence from the 1920s 2D rubber hose cartoon style, I made a 3D model to visually portray that mindset."
Check out her awesome artwork and didactics, which was created as part of VCE Art Making & Exhibiting.
Title: Caught in a chook-hold, 2024
Materials: Newspaper, masking tape, wire, acrylic paint, hot glue, wood, pot, rubber chickens.
There’s this fear called ‘agoraphobia’ and it’s the fear of leaving an environment that is known to be safe. School is a bubble of safety; it can be draining and frustrating but it’s a place where friends and memories are held for 13 years of your life. It’s a space you don’t realise ends until it’s the last year. That last stretch is fun, but what happens when it’s all over? What happens next? Anything. There’s a trapped cycle of fear of the future and leaving that comfort spot. A stuck mindset while days keep going and doesn’t slow down.
Title: Why not, 2024
Materials: Posca’s on canvas
There's almost this cartoon and silly aspect of life, living and the roads you take. There are these bright opportunities and the future of all the places you’ll be. You will always be you, but your path of life can find you in so many occupations or lifestyles. You can never change who you are, but you can always change what you do.
