As part of the Year 11 VCE Vocational Major Personal Development Skills subject, students partnered with residents from Heathglen Retirement Village to build meaningful connections and explore how technology can support health and wellbeing.
After learning about residents’ careers, families and life experiences, students planned activities based on their interests. These included exploring healthy recipe websites, learning about Artificial Intelligence, playing interactive memory games, practicing Tai Chi using online guides and enjoying a Kahoot quiz where residents discovered some modern student slang, including the phrase ‘touch grass.’
This experience helped students build confidence, communication and relationship-building skills while making a positive contribution to their community.
Heathglen resident Bob reflected on the program, saying, “I could really see how much the students grew in confidence over the span of their visits. We've really enjoyed having them here.”
Experiences like this are central to the VCE Vocational Major, giving students authentic opportunities to develop skills such as empathy, communication, problem-solving and teamwork. We are proud of the maturity, compassion and enthusiasm our students showed throughout this rewarding partnership with Heathglen Retirement Village.
