Each year, the Heathdale Christian College community is invited to participate in Children’s Book Week, an initiative started by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) to encourage and celebrate the importance of reading in each child’s life. As Christians, we recognise the significance of this initiative — through the Bible, we learn about Jesus and His Gospel message. It is through the written scripture that Jesus is revealed to us, and it is because of the Bible that we understand, to the extent that humans can, the love, grace and mercy of God.
However, we know that much more about Jesus remains beyond words, and we often stand in awe as God continues to reveal Himself to us. Similarly, children’s books reflect what we see, do, and feel in our world while igniting hope and stimulating our imaginations. This year’s Children’s Book Week theme, ‘Reading is Magic,’ captures this essence perfectly, aiming to excite children about the awe-inspiring wonders of God, His creation, and our place in it.
We celebrated Book Week with the Libraries transformed into a magical space, a dress-up day and parade at each campus, lunchtime activities, story time, competitions and an incursion by Perform Education themed ‘Maybe a Miracle.’ Library classes also read the shortlisted books and engaged in related activities.
