Year 11 and 12 Economics students recently had the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom with an excursion to the NAB building on Bourke Street. In this reflection, Year 12 student Aditri shares insights into how the experience deepened their understanding of the Federal Budget, banking systems, and real-world economics.
"The Year 11 and 12 Economics classes recently went on an excursion to the NAB building on Bourke Street, where we learned more about Australia’s financial system and the Federal Budget.
During the visit, a NAB economist gave us a presentation about budgetary policy and explained how the government uses the Federal Budget to manage things like economic growth, inflation, employment, and the cost of living. It was interesting because it linked directly to the topics we have been learning about in class, which made the concepts easier to understand in a real-world context.
One of the best parts of the excursion was the live Q&A session, where we continued asking questions about budgetary policy and how government decisions can impact the economy and everyday Australians. The discussion was very interactive and gave us a deeper understanding of the role economics plays in society.
Another part of the excursion that stood out was learning about how NAB protects customers’ credit card information during online transactions. It was surprising to see how much security and technology is involved in keeping banking systems safe from fraud and cyber threats.
Overall, the excursion was a valuable experience that helped us better understand economics, banking, and financial security, while also giving us a glimpse into possible future career opportunities in the finance industry."
