Ladies and gentlemen, wordsmiths and syllable sorcerers, gather 'round as I regale you with the tale of the most riveting, rhapsodic and resplendent Spelling Bee this side of the dictionary!
Yes, the first ever Melton Secondary House Spelling Bee was an event where the where vowels danced and consonants clashed in the hallowed Assembly Hall. The stage was set, the microphone gleamed like a polished semicolon and the audience buzzed with anticipation - which is to be expected in during a spelling bee - buzz buzz!
All of the contestant participated with courage as they very quickly realised that my Spelling Bee was no ordinary feat. Rather than just spelling words, contestants chose categories based on the subjects at school and then had to undertake various challenges associated with the subject that had been chosen. Students had to guess the food they were feeling whilst blindfolded for 'Food Technology,' solve maths problems and spell out the answers for 'Maths,' run around the entire campus and come back before spelling their word for 'PE,' and act out words under the heading of 'Drama' while teachers had to correctly guess and spell the action.
Hats off to all of the contestants who found their feet on stage and spelt words, whether they be right or wrong. But the win went to Stanway, closely followed by Carey, Taylor and finally Judson. Well done to Stanway - I encourage all Secondary students to begin practicing their spelling words now for the Bee in 2026.
