Semester 1 for Prep concluded with rich, hands-on learning experiences that promoted teamwork, creativity and experimenting. They explored their local community through collaborative construction projects, celebrated a major literacy milestone with Milo the Monkey and investigated the fascinating properties of materials in science!
"Our Prep students have been enthusiastically exploring the theme of local community by designing and building models of important buildings using a range of materials.
Cardboard was the standout favourite, creatively transformed into detailed versions of 7-Eleven stores, fire stations, churches and our own school. With a strong focus on collaboration, students worked together in small groups—sharing ideas, helping each other with cutting and construction and solving problems as a team. They showed a wonderful growth mindset, embracing mistakes as learning opportunities and persisting when their designs didn’t work the first time.
As part of a co-curricular link to science, students also investigated the properties of different materials, learning about strength, flexibility, and suitability for various purposes—knowledge they applied when making decisions during construction. From colourful signs to mini playgrounds and fire trucks, each creation reflected not only their creativity but also their growing understanding of the world around them.
This hands-on project encouraged teamwork, resilience and a deeper connection to their local community."

"In Prep, we reached a major literacy milestone! Over the first semester, our students immersed themselves in learning all the letters of the alphabet and their core sounds through the Little Learners Love Literacy program.
We have been reading the book, 'Milo’s Birthday Surprise,' and met Milo the Monkey and his 25 friends. Each character in the book represents a different letter and sound, bringing the alphabet to life in a fun and engaging way!
To celebrate our wonderful learning progress, the Preps came dressed up as one of Milo’s character friends on the final day of the Semester 1. The classroom buzzed with excitement as students enjoyed themed activities—and even had a surprise visit from Milo himself!
What a fantastic way to end the term with a joyful celebration of our students’ learning – like seeds nurtured in good soil, our Preps have truly blossomed this semester."

"Our Prep students at both Melton and Werribee took part in an exciting science incursion all about materials and their properties.
Through a series of hands-on activities and engaging experiments, our young scientists explored a range of materials, observing, testing and classifying them based on their features. They investigated how different properties—such as flexibility, strength and absorbency—make certain materials perfect for specific uses.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to think critically, ask questions and develop their understanding of the world around them."
